STATEMENT
I have been working as a graphic designer and editorial illustrator for most of my professional career. A lot of my work involved translating someone else’s ideas into a visual form. As a fine artist I started began working with oil paints on medium to large-size canvases. Here I am, years later, returning home, so to speak, spending more time putting my own thoughts on canvas and paper.
My art reflects my desire to change the way we see things around us. I am inspired to create paintings that take the viewer into an environment from a different vantage point, thus enhancing their experience. For my realistic style of painting, the medium that I work with is acrylic paint.
Shirley Schnell, my Foundations teacher at The Kansas City Art Institute, challenged our class “to walk through life sideways,” to change the way we normally see and experience life. She would encourage us to try to look at, and express a different perspective/ interpretation of the world around us; this is something that I try to convey in my paintings. Other artists that I’m inspired by include Paul Balmer, Bruce Holwerda, John Biggers, Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, Laura Wheeler Waring, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustav Klimt, Aaron Douglas, Ivan Powell, Reynolds Ruffin, Thomas Blackshear, Don Miller and A.M. Cassandre (Art Deco), to name a few.
